Zoloft Warnings and Reviews

The Olympic Games that will be held in London on July 27th up until the 12th of August will gather athletes all over the world to compete in their given sports. There is an estimated 205 countries participating in the summer games with 147 for the Paralympics. There are a total of 300 sporting events available to compete in. The athletes that compete in the events all want to bring honor and glory for the country they hail from as their countrymen roots for them. They are even tested for the use of some drugs such as opioid and steroids before participating in the games.

These men and women competing in different sports are considered to be the cream of the crop when it comes to their chosen sport and they had given all they have got to reach it. They may have even sacrificed time with their family and friends in order to train hard for the coming games. They need to keep their head in the game and they could not afford to lose focus as the competition draws near. It is no small wonder why these men and women would succumb to mental pressures before and during the games.

Trainers also try to prepare these players mentally and not only physically. Tension keeps these individuals in shape but too much may cause them to break. Preparation, as they say, is half the battle won. Thus, it is very important to get ready for what is about to happen. Olympic players try to rehearse every possible move that may occur which may possibly jeopardize or aid in their success together with their coaches. Concentration is the key in battling pre-game jitters. When the player keeps his or her concentration on the game, they would be able to know their next move.

Coaches and trainers try to keep a positive air in the team without disregarding the opponents. %u201CWe can do it%u201D mantras are often heard to psyche the players into concentration. Self doubt will only do damage and might cost them the game. Each game is viewed as a one-shot deal and a chance to show their capabilities and not doing well in even just one might cost them the gold medal. Sports psychologists are now available to help coach these athletes to have the mental strength to withstand whatever problem they may face in the London Olympics. Though a player%u2019s determination is one thing that would get them through the whole duration of this competitive event, one would need the help of formulations such as Zoloft. This medication may keep their mood stabilized but they are suggested to be wary of using it due to some Zoloft birth defects.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) research featured the increasing use of antidepressants, as published on the website Psychiatric Times. The author considered this data disturbing because of the several warnings and reviews on antidepressants like Zoloft.

Zoloft is a medication for major depression (MDD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, premenstrual dyphoric disorder (PMDD), panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Despite the warnings from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), medical researchers and medical institutions, a 400 percent increase in usage over the past 15 years was noted by CDC. This means that at present, 11 percent of the American population is taking one or more antidepressants.

In 2006, the FDA issued a warning about the probable Zoloft-attributed birth defects, including miscarriage, withdrawal symptoms, clubbed foot, cleft lip or palate, delayed development, persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), gastrochisis, enlarged heart, septal heart defects, left outflow tract heart defects, macroephaly, craniosyntosis, neural tube defects and spina bifida.

The public health advisory stated that the FDA is advising health care professionals to discuss the potential risk of birth defects with patients who are taking Zoloft and who plan to become pregnant or are in their first three months of pregnancy. Health care professionals should consider discontinuing Zoloft (and switching to another antidepressant if indicated) in these patients. In some patients, the benefits of continuing Zoloft may be greater than the potential risk to the fetus. FDA is advising health care professionals to avoid prescribing Zoloft in women who are in the first three months of pregnancy or who are planning pregnancy, unless other treatment options are not appropriate.

Analyzing results from 372 studies regarding antidepressants, the FDA found that these drugs could make children and teenagers irrational, hostile, violent and suicidal.
In 2007, the FDA further issued Zoloft warnings on the drug%u2019s risk of increased suicidal attempts and behaviors. The FDA directed antidepressant manufacturing companies to place a %u201Cbalck box%u201D warning to the drug. Black box warnings are placed if the drug carries risk of a permanently-disabling, life threatening, or fatal side effect.

In 2008, the New England Journal of Medicine published a research study reflecting that antidepressant effectiveness has been misrepresented in US publications. It presented that studies reflecting antidepressant ineffectiveness were not normally published or were published with ambiguous results.
The July 2011 issue of Archives of General Psychiatry reflected the link between the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) to newborns with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This was featured on the website PRWeb on Novemeber 9, 2011.

Aside from these warnings and reviews, medical reports from patients also present various complaints about the harmful side effects. This incited them to file Zoloft lawsuit against its manufacturer, Pfizer.

The antidepressant drug Sertraline hydrochloride (brand names Zoloft and Lustral) was introduced to the pharmaceutical world by its manufacturing company Pfizer in the year 1991. This drug is used to treat major depression and is labeled under the Selective Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) class of antidepressants. Disorder such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks, social anxiety disorders (social phobia) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are treated with Zoloft. It seems like Zoloft has come a long way into achieving its standards as an effective antidepressant. However, Zoloft has had a fair share of controversies and may not be as safe as you thought it is.

An uproar arose as a consequence for the released advertising propaganda for this antidepressant drug which went like this: "While the cause is unknown, depression may be related to an imbalance of natural chemicals between nerve cells in the brain. Prescription Zoloft works to correct this imbalance. You just shouldn't have to feel this way anymore." Since the drug was not supported with a successful study which could justify its efficiency as an antidepressant drug, the wordings used in the advertisement was thought to be misleading to the public. For this case, a warning letter was issued to Pfizer which was sent by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

The results from the pre-marketing clinical trials conducted to test the new antidepressant drug Zoloft was met with unsatisfactory results. The test shows that the drug can cause weak-to-moderate effect on severe depression, but has shown better result in placebo study for dysthymia, a milder form of depression disorder. Inpatients and outpatients suffering from depression are treated with this antidepressant drug.

Reports concerning Zoloft's inclination to incur adverse reactions to child-bearing women who were suffering from depression are rising. Fetal blood circulation of babies from women taking the drug has been found to have unnerving levels of the antidepressant drug. Pregnant women unknowingly pass the drug to their child since some drugs easily undergo placental transfer. Another serious complication linked with this drug is the increased likelihood of patients suffering from depression to entertain suicidal thoughts. That is why patients taking Zoloft are closely monitored for the first few drug administrations for signs and symptoms of psyche changes such as mood and behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, restlessness and other forms of suicidal ideation. This being said, it is best to consult ones doctor before planning to put Zoloft treatment on hold.
